Chandler and architect Charles M. Robinson. It is also significant for its association with the locally important firm Carneal and Johnston, its high-style Gothic Revival design, and its rare use of granite, which is uncommon in a city of mostly brick buildings.","narrative":"Springfield School is a two-and-one-half story granite-faced school at 608 North 26th Street in Richmond, built in 1913 with a raised basement, an H-shaped plan and a crenelated parapet. It replaced an 1880 brick school on the same site, where classes had been held since at least 1869. The main entrance has a Tudor arch, a label hood mold and wrought iron gates marked with S-shaped shields. Designed by Carneal and Johnston and built by the Wise Granite Company, it is a good example of Gothic Revival styling adapted to a standard school plan. Granite is rare on Richmond buildings, and this is one of only two extant public schools in the city extensively faced with it. The school belongs to the construction program led by Superintendent J.A.C. Chandler and overseen by architect Charles M. Robinson after 1909. In 1948 it was renamed for J. Andrew Bowler and became the first former white school on Church Hill to admit black students. It is now vacant, but its plan and many original features survive.","period_of_significance":"1914-1930","architect_builder":"Robinson, Charles M.; Supervising Architect; Carneal and Johnston; Architects; Wise Granite Company; Builder","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently vacant and in fair condition; interior has minor alterations but the plan is intact and original features such as stairways remain.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.516039-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/24/6789/41678924/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/92001032.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001032/3537454de0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001032/3537454de0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Morgan Riley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Springfield_School_Richmond_Va.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Riley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Springfield_School_Richmond_Va.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"97000958","name":"Church Hill North Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/church-hill-north-historic-district-97000958/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678924","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield_School,_Richmond","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7581045"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/springfield-school-92001032/"}
