The remodeling added only additions and embellishments, so the original Federal-style form remains visible. A nearby house that is nearly identical to the original design stands in contrast to it.","narrative":"Located on King's Highway in the village of Chuckatuck, this frame house began about 1856 as a two-and-a-half-story, three-bay, side-hall-plan dwelling in the Federal style, built for Edward F. Wicks on a lot sold off from the Godwin family farm. Around 1900, Charles B. Godwin remodeled it in the Queen Anne style, adding a round corner tower with a conical roof, a wraparound porch, a balconied dormer, an encaustic tile vestibule, and elaborate plasterwork in the parlor. Because the work consisted of additions, the earlier structure remains visible, especially on the east side with its paired chimneys. Seven late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century outbuildings, including a summer kitchen, smokehouse, and log barn, show the self-sufficiency of the property. The house was valued as an unusual and locally rare example of an antebellum home transformed in the Queen Anne manner. Later owners included Mills E. Godwin, Sr., whose son became governor of Virginia.","period_of_significance":"c1856-1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal; Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in an excellent state of repair, with the main house still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.728461-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/6838/41683853/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/92001028.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001028/3edd0a95d5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92001028/3edd0a95d5-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Joel Bradshaw","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Suffolk-Chuckatuck-Godwin-Knight-house.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Joel Bradshaw</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Suffolk-Chuckatuck-Godwin-Knight-house.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"95000393","name":"Chuckatuck Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/chuckatuck-historic-district-95000393/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683853","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%E2%80%93Knight_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16839486"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/suffolk/godwin-knight-house-92001028/"}
