Later additions were placed at the rear and preserve the original low, compact massing. It is also the only known surviving Hingham house built by a descendant of early settler Thomas Chubbuck, and it is tied to the Chubbuck and Gardner families.","narrative":"Built in 1778 by farmer Thomas Chubbuck, Jr., this three-quarter Cape Cod house sits on a drumlin above Main Street in Hingham's Liberty Plain area. The one-story building measures 30 by 20 feet and has a granite foundation, painted clapboard walls, a wood-shingled ridge roof, a central brick chimney and six-over-six sash windows set tightly under the eaves. Inside, the northeast parlor keeps its mitered fireplace surround and molded cornice, and the kitchen hall has a fully paneled fireplace with a beehive oven. Additions including a dormered rear wing and a family room were built at the back, so the street facade is unchanged. The house is considered locally significant as a fine, largely unaltered Cape Cod example, one of two three-quarter Capes in Hingham. It is also the only known surviving Hingham house built by a descendant of early settler Thomas Chubbuck, and the Gardner family owned it from 1850 to 1900.","period_of_significance":"1778-1900","architect_builder":"unknown (built by Thomas Chubbuck, Jr., farmer, as his residence)","architectural_style":"Colonial; Cape Cod","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Single residence until 1986; rental property as of 1992.
