Turton.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of Napa's most successful and nearly unaltered examples of late nineteenth-century Queen Anne residential architecture, ranking among the ten or twelve most significant of hundreds of houses from the period. It also illustrates the middle-class success of its first owner, grocer William Andrews. It retains a high degree of architectural integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1892 at 741 Seminary Street in downtown Napa, this two-and-a-half story frame house was designed by local architect Luther M. Turton for William Andrews. Andrews, an English-born former miller, ran a downtown grocery until retiring in 1911. The house has an asymmetrical plan, a slate hipped roof with cross gables, a two-story bay window, and a wraparound porch. Its exterior carries abundant detail, including patterned shingles, spindlework, molded sunbursts, finials, and a paneled chimney, set above a raised stone foundation. Turton kept the design grounded by using heavy cut stone and a concrete front stairway. The house has changed little, with only a back porch enclosure around 1945 and rear stairs around 1960, and it remains in very good condition. It was listed for its architecture, as one of Napa's finest and least altered Queen Anne houses and a vivid example of Victorian-era middle-class success.","period_of_significance":"1892","architect_builder":"Turton, Luther Mark (architect)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in very good condition with only minor changes since 1892; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.403596-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/92000789.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000789/6e344223fc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000789/6e344223fc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Andrews_House,_741_Seminary_St.,_Napa,_CA_9-5-2010_6-35-34_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Andrews_House,_741_Seminary_St.,_Napa,_CA_9-5-2010_6-35-34_PM.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"97000042","name":"Napa Abajo-Fuller Park Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/napa-abajo-fuller-park-historic-district-97000042/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859986","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Andrews_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q65067048"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/napa-county/andrews-william-house-92000789/"}
