It is locally significant as the sole survivor of the Fishers trackside railroad complex. Rare surviving construction drawings and specifications add to its importance. An amendment added Transportation as an area of significance under Criterion A.","narrative":"Built around 1845 beside the Auburn & Rochester Railroad in the hamlet of Fishers, this small pumphouse is made of rough field cobbles laid in horizontal rows, with limestone quoins, sills, lintels and a simple stone cornice. It measures fifteen feet square and seventeen feet tall. A stream once ran beneath it, and water was pumped through an underground pipe beneath the tracks and Main Street to a standpipe feeding a water tower, where steam locomotives took on water. The pumphouse is the only surviving piece of a trackside complex that also held a depot, a water tank and other railroad buildings. It is the only pumphouse among about 660 known cobblestone buildings in New York State. Original plans and specifications survive, which is unusual for anonymous vernacular masonry. Charles Fisher, the first station agent, may have built or commissioned it. The building is now vacant, and its machinery was sold off in the 1930s and 1940s.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1845","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century; cobblestone masonry","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and not in use; openings on the west and south elevations are boarded up, and no original pumping equipment survives.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.759677-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92000551.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000551/d8f57c5512-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000551/d8f57c5512-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jsbaileyut","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pumphouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jsbaileyut</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pumphouse.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314129","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobblestone_Railroad_Pumphouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5138824"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ontario-county/cobblestone-railroad-pumphouse-92000551/"}
