Roberts in the Prairie School style.","why_significant":"The building is significant under Criterion C as a Masonic temple designed in the Prairie School style by an architect often associated with that style. Its integrity is very good, and its major interior spaces, especially the social hall and lodge room, are almost entirely original. The design clearly reflects its original use as a Masonic meeting place.","narrative":"Built in 1917 at 200 South 5th Avenue in Maywood, this three-story brick building served as a Masonic temple. Architect E.E. Roberts of Oak Park designed it for a cost reported at $40,000, and it housed Maywood Lodge 869 and other Masonic bodies. Its exterior shows the crisp geometry of the Prairie School, with buff brick facades, banded brickwork, paired tall windows, vertical piers and a geometric brick frieze beneath a wide metal cornice. Inside, the third floor holds the most important spaces: a social hall with a Roman brick fireplace and a two-story lodge room with a stage, pointed proscenium arch, box seating, balcony and pipe organ. The lodge room has no windows, following Masonic custom. Alterations are limited to the front doorway, a removable storefront addition and some interior partitions and painted moldings. The building is considered locally significant for its architecture and its well-preserved original design.","period_of_significance":"1917","architect_builder":"Roberts, E.E.","architectural_style":"Prairie School","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant; the description notes a deteriorated condition, drywall partitions and an unsympathetic one-story storefront addition at the northeast corner.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.76667-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/8908/28890823/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/92000491.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000491/d27698a8fd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000491/d27698a8fd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ImageMasonic_Temple.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ImageMasonic_Temple.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28890823","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonic_Temple_Building_(Maywood,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6783782"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/masonic-temple-building-92000491/"}
