It was published in Henry Saylor's 1911 book on bungalows and in the July 1912 Architectural Review. It also has extraordinary integrity.","narrative":"This one-story bungalow at 901 South 8th Avenue in Maywood, Illinois, was built shortly after 1908 on land subdivided by Henry F. Akin, who served as the village's mayor in 1898. The L-shaped wood frame house is sheathed in stucco and sits on a raised concrete foundation under a shallow hip roof with wide overhangs. Horizontal wood banding, ribbons of casement windows and a brick fireplace of narrow Roman bricks reflect Prairie School design, inside and out. Tallmadge and Watson, known Prairie School architects working in Oak Park and the North Shore suburbs, designed it. The house was published in Henry Saylor's 1911 book on bungalows and in the 1912 Architectural Review. It is considered one of the three finest architect-designed Prairie School homes in Maywood and keeps nearly all its original details, apart from a replaced front door and a glazed porch. A modern garage at the rear does not contribute to its historic character.","period_of_significance":"ca.1910","architect_builder":"Tallmadge, Thomas and Watson, Vernon","architectural_style":"Late 19th Century and Early Twentieth Century American Movements: Prairie School","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the porch has been glazed and the front door replaced, but other historic details are intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.500728-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/21/8908/28890821/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/92000487.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000487/62eb214fff-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000487/62eb214fff-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Akin_House.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Akin_House.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28890821","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs._Henry_F._Akin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q98769002"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/akin-mrs-henry-f-house-92000487/"}
