It is the last surviving original structure of East White Oak village and the only small early twentieth-century frame school left in the city. It is significant under Criterion A for education and black ethnic heritage.","narrative":"Built in 1916, this modest one-story frame school at 1801 Tenth Street in Greensboro served East White Oak, the only village the Proximity Manufacturing Company built for its black employees. Its seven-bay front has twelve-over-twelve windows and a portico with four solid wood columns and a pediment. The building was originally T-shaped, and additions of the late 1920s or 1930s made it square. The school opened with eighty-seven students and two teachers, and enrollment reached 123 by 1925. Its pupils came from families doing unskilled mill work. The company ran the school until the city system absorbed the mill village schools in 1946, after which the building became a black YMCA. When the village was sold in 1955 and its houses were later demolished, residents bought the school and turned it into a community center in 1956. It is the last original structure of the village and the only small early twentieth-century school building surviving in Greensboro.","period_of_significance":"1916-1941","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Used as a community center since 1956; the interior has been altered and compromised, though the exterior looks much as it did in a 1925 photograph.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.515246-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/7179/47717959/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/92000360.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000360/3795eb19fc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000360/3795eb19fc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rhpotter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_White_Oak_School,_Former_(Greensboro,_North_Carolina)_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhpotter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_White_Oak_School,_Former_(Greensboro,_North_Carolina)_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717959","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Former_East_White_Oak_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18705885"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/guilford-county/east-white-oak-school-former-92000360/"}
