It combines Spanish Colonial Revival and Moorish detailing, which sets it apart from the Gothic Revival and vernacular churches built in Abilene before 1939. It was designed by San Antonio architect Leo M.J. Dielmann.","narrative":"Sacred Heart Catholic Church, built in 1931 at 1633 South Eighth Street in Abilene, is a two-story masonry sanctuary with a basilica plan and gabled roofs covered in ceramic tile. Its walls combine brick, glazed tile and cast stone. The north facade is the most elaborate, with a three-story domed tower and belfry, a horseshoe-arched entrance with bas relief, and windows of leaded art glass and stained glass. San Antonio architect Leo M.J. Dielmann designed the building, as he did many other Catholic churches in Texas. The congregation traces its beginnings to masses held in Abilene homes around 1881 and a first sanctuary dedicated by 1895. After the city grew, the parish sold that building in 1926 and chose the South Eighth Street site for a larger church. The building was listed for its architecture. It is regarded as the city's least altered and best preserved sanctuary, and its Spanish Colonial Revival and Moorish detailing distinguishes it from other local churches.","period_of_significance":"1931","architect_builder":"Dielmann, Leo M.J.","architectural_style":"Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, retaining its integrity, and still in use as a religious facility.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.97708-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/9700/40970064/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000233.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000233/35fd64930a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000233/35fd64930a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sacred_Heart_Church_Abilene_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sacred_Heart_Church_Abilene_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970064","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107330034"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/taylor-county/sacred-heart-catholic-church-92000233/"}
