It was the home of a rancher, reflecting the wealth of cattlemen who prospered in Abilene after the railroad arrived. Few Classical Revival houses were built in Abilene, and this is considered one of the best.","narrative":"Built about 1905 at 1942 North Third Street in Abilene, this 1 1/2-story frame house is a local example of Classical Revival design. It has a modified rectangular plan, a low hipped roof and asbestos siding. The symmetrical south facade features a two-tiered portico with a classically inspired relief between the floors, squat Ionic columns, and an entrance with sidelights and a transom. A central dormer, apparently Palladian in design, is incorporated into the portico and has smaller Ionic columns. A frame carriage house or garage stands to the northeast. The house was the home of a rancher, one of many cattlemen who came to Abilene because of the railroad and built some of the city's largest dwellings to reflect their success. Relatively few Classical Revival houses were built in the city, and this one is regarded as among the best. It remains in good condition, with few alterations to its historic appearance, and is still a single-family residence.","period_of_significance":"c. 1905","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and retaining its integrity; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.943008-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/9700/40970038/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000221.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000221/fa291fd117-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000221/fa291fd117-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:C.A.LaniusHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:C.A.LaniusHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970038","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107320224"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/taylor-county/lanius-c-a-house-92000221/"}
