It is one of the largest and most majestic historic dwellings in Abilene, with a two-story pedimented portico and giant-order Ionic columns. It also reflects the success of businessmen who built grand houses along North Third Street.","narrative":"Built about 1905 at 1910 North Third Street in Abilene, this two-story Classical Revival house has a boxy form, a hipped roof and wood siding. Its most prominent feature is a two-story pedimented portico with fluted Ionic columns, flanked by one-story porch wings that give the front a symmetrical look. The entrance has a leaded glass oval light, sidelights and a transom, and a matching door opens onto a balcony within the portico. Inside, the house follows a central hall plan. North Third Street drew some of Abilene's earliest and most successful businessmen and professionals, and by 1910 it was lined with large houses. Dr. Magee operated a drug store at North First and Pine streets. Few intact houses from Abilene's rapid growth in the early 1900s survive unaltered, and this house is considered one of the best examples. It is recognized as an outstanding local example of Classical Revival architecture. The architect and builder are unknown.","period_of_significance":"c. 1905","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current use is a single dwelling; the form says few alterations detract from its historic character.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.273389-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/9700/40970036/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000220.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000220/1c6c95b084-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000220/1c6c95b084-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Michael Barera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abilene_June_2019_60_(J._D._Magee_House).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Barera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abilene_June_2019_60_(J._D._Magee_House).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970036","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107320223"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/taylor-county/magee-j-d-house-92000220/"}
