Its gambrel roof is rarely seen on Abilene houses, and few Colonial Revival dwellings were built in the city. The house is virtually unaltered and retains its integrity.","narrative":"Built around 1910 at 1842 North Fifth Street in Abilene, this two-story frame house is a local example of Colonial Revival design. It has a rectangular plan, wood siding, asphalt shingles and a side-facing gambrel roof, a form rarely seen on the city's houses. The symmetrical front has a three-bay hipped porch with Tuscan supports, two entry doors, and one-over-one wood windows. A shed dormer and interior brick chimneys complete the roofline. A one-story side-gable garage also contributes to the property, while a modern carport does not. Charles Motz, for whom the house was apparently built, was a prominent businessman who sold insurance and real estate. The house stands in one of Abilene's older and more intact residential neighborhoods. Colonial Revival houses were only marginally popular in early twentieth-century Texas, and relatively few were built in Abilene, which makes this one of the most noteworthy local illustrations of the style. It was listed for its architecture and remains virtually unaltered.","period_of_significance":"c. 1910","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as presently unoccupied, in fair condition (elsewhere called somewhat poor) and virtually unaltered.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.237428-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/9700/40970040/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000216.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000216/9220bdb358-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000216/9220bdb358-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CharlesMotzHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CharlesMotzHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970040","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001324"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/taylor-county/motz-charles-house-92000216/"}
