Minter and designed by Nichols & Campbell. A 1-story garage/apartment stands southwest of it.","why_significant":"It is nominated under Criterion B for its association with William A. Minter, founder of Minter Dry Goods Company, one of Abilene's best-known department stores for over 60 years. It is the surviving residence most directly associated with him, since no other homes he lived in remain in Abilene. It also relates to the context of the railroad and Abilene's growth as a wholesale and distribution center.","narrative":"Built about 1925 at 340 Beech Street in Abilene, this 2 1/2-story Tudor Revival house was designed by the local firm Nichols & Campbell for William A. Minter. It has a steeply pitched slate roof, a prominent cross gable, brick veneer walls over a frame structure, and a one-story porch with five elliptical arches framed in light cast stone or terra cotta. A garage/apartment of similar materials stands to the southwest. Minter, born in Mississippi in 1871, started working in a dry goods store as a boy, opened Minter Dry Goods Company in 1900, and built it into one of the largest department stores in West Texas. He also helped organize a local church and a locally owned gas company. He lived in the house until his death in 1935. Because no other residence of his survives in Abilene, this one carries the strongest link to him. Replacement windows detract somewhat, but the form and key features remain, and the house now serves as offices.","period_of_significance":"c. 1925-1935","architect_builder":"Nichols & Campbell","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival","criteria":["B"],"status_note":"Well maintained and used as an office for an architectural firm; original windows have been replaced with modern fixed glass, but the house is in good condition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.733391-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/9700/40970088/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000198.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000198/2e13e3ea78-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000198/2e13e3ea78-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Michael Barera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abilene_June_2019_55_(William_A._Minter_House).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Barera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abilene_June_2019_55_(William_A._Minter_House).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970088","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107320216"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/taylor-county/minter-william-a-house-92000198/"}
