A two-story garage/apartment stands at the rear of the lot.","why_significant":"The house is nominated under Criterion C for architecture as one of Abilene's premier examples of Prairie School-influenced residential design. It shows noteworthy craftsmanship, especially on its porch, and remains virtually unaltered. It is also tied to the city's 1920s growth and its elite housing.","narrative":"Built around 1929 at 1302 Amarillo in Abilene, this two-story house combines a frame structure with brick veneer walls, a concrete foundation and a tile-covered hipped roof with a dormer. Its square plan, wide three-bay front porch, massive brick piers, deep eaves with paired consoles and a side porte cochere give it an imposing presence. A second-floor balcony and a gable eyebrow over the center bay relieve the symmetrical east facade. A two-story garage/apartment at the rear repeats the brick construction and cast stone sills. The house was listed as an example of Prairie School-influenced design, a style associated with Abilene's affluent residents during the city's 1920s growth. Few surviving examples have such fine workmanship and so little alteration. The earliest known owner was Dr. W.A.V. Cash, a physician and surgeon, who lived there with his wife Erma by 1929. By 1932 city directories show it owned by Mrs. Fannie Cohen, a widow.","period_of_significance":"c. 1929","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Prairie School","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and retaining its integrity; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.263756-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/9700/40970046/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000195.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000195/209003e9c3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000195/209003e9c3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:W._A._V._Cash_House_Abilene_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:W._A._V._Cash_House_Abilene_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970046","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107320269"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/taylor-county/cash-w-a-v-house-92000195/"}
