It is an excellent local example of Classical Revival architecture, a style popular with academic institutions of the era. It is also tied to the university's move to its present campus and the fundraising that paid for new buildings.","narrative":"Luce Hall is a two-story brick classroom building on the Abilene Christian University campus in Abilene, Texas, completed in 1929 and also known as the Education Building. It faces west and follows a Classical Revival design. Brick veneer walls carry a subtle relief pattern, and a parapet with a partial balustrade sits on a cast stone cornice and hides the flat roof. The symmetrical main facade has a recessed central entrance framed by a cast stone entablature and pilasters, with brick quoins, paired and banded brick pilasters, cast stone urns and cartouches. It was named for a prominent West Texas ranching family whose gift, then their largest to the school, helped fund construction when the college moved to its new campus. It is regarded as the least altered and best preserved historic building on the campus, and an excellent local example of Classical Revival architecture. It remains in good condition and retains its integrity.","period_of_significance":"1929","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, retaining integrity, and still used for classrooms by the university.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.793157-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/32/9700/40970032/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000194.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000194/e4bc9620c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000194/e4bc9620c1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Keithimus of English Wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ZonaLuceBuilding.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Keithimus of English Wikipedia</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ZonaLuceBuilding.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970032","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q108073321"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/taylor-county/luce-hall-92000194/"}
