It adds to the concentration of early buildings that portray a pioneer Texas community. Early owners included Col. Nimrod Lindsay Norton, who surveyed Panhandle lands and served on the Capitol Building Commission, and educators John and Kate Orgain.","narrative":"Built around 1872 on Main Street in Salado, Texas, this two-story frame I-house has a center-hall plan, a rear ell, limestone chimneys at both gable ends and a full-length two-story gallery. The gallery was removed in the 20th century and rebuilt in 1990-91 from historic photographs. Its walls are painted wood clapboard over a limestone foundation, and each of the four main rooms has a fireplace. Early owners included Col. Nimrod Lindsay Norton, a Confederate officer who surveyed Panhandle lands in 1879 and served on the commission overseeing construction of the Texas Capitol. In 1882 the property passed to John and Kate Orgain, who were prominent in Salado education. The house was judged significant for architecture because it clearly shows the form, plan and transitional Victorian detailing of early Texas vernacular building. Once considered too deteriorated for listing, it was carefully restored and now serves as a bed and breakfast inn.","period_of_significance":"c.1872","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: I-house","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored and rehabilitated in 1990-91, including reconstruction of the two-story gallery; currently used as a bed and breakfast inn.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.075034-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/9682/40968233/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000185.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000185/fb06c0084b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000185/fb06c0084b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NortonOrgain1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NortonOrgain1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968233","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton-Orgain_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001563"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bell-county/norton-orgain-house-92000185/"}
