It was built in 1923 to designs by the New York firm Starrett and Van Vleck.","why_significant":"The school is significant as evidence of the rapid growth and consolidation of the Greensboro school system during the 1920s. It is also significant architecturally as a well-preserved example of the large, classically detailed brick schools built in the city that decade, designed by a New York firm specializing in institutional and commercial work.","narrative":"Opened in 1923 on West Lee Street, southwest of downtown Greensboro, this two-story school is faced in dark wire-cut brick with limestone trim. Its classical decoration centers on a projecting auditorium pavilion, where an arcade of five tall windows sits beneath limestone arches, balusters and a heavy cornice. Inside, corridors run through each floor, and the two-story auditorium doubled as a gymnasium. It was one of four schools, with Caldwell, Price and Aycock, funded by a million-dollar bond issue during a decade of rapid growth in the city's school system. About $245,000 went to this building. The New York firm of Starrett and Van Vleck, known for large commercial and institutional work, prepared the plans with help from local architects. The school served as a junior high and later an elementary school until the 1970s. A 1956 cafeteria at the rear is noncontributing. Today an urban ministry occupies the building.","period_of_significance":"1923-1941","architect_builder":"Starrett and Van Vleck, architects","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Last used as a school in the 1970s; now home to an urban ministry that uses the auditorium, with classrooms partitioned as offices or converted to art studios.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.257295-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/7179/47717951/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/92000177.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000177/7532112b5e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000177/7532112b5e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rhpotter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Charles_D._McIver_School_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhpotter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Charles_D._McIver_School_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717951","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_D._McIver_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5076660"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/guilford-county/mciver-charles-d-school-former-92000177/"}
