Annis on land his family had owned since the 1820s.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant under Criterion C for architecture as the best surviving frame example of Greek Revival style in North Royalton. It is the only upright-and-double-wing house in the area, a less common form than the upright-and-single-wing type. It keeps a high degree of integrity despite a 1914 remodeling and a 1981 rear garage.","narrative":"Built around 1833 by John M. Annis, this clapboard farmhouse on State Road in North Royalton is an upright-and-double-wing example of Greek Revival design. A two-story front-gabled center section is flanked by two lower, symmetrical side-gabled wings, set on a tooled sandstone foundation. Details include a pedimented and carved front entry, 6/6 windows with pedimented surrounds, cornerboards, and a broad entablature with prominent returns. The Annis family, who came from Connecticut to the Western Reserve, owned the land from 1825 and kept the house until the 1960s. In 1914 John B. Annis added a columned porch, a Palladian gable window, and a rear kitchen addition. The house later stood vacant and deteriorated until it was rescued. It was listed for architecture because it is the best surviving frame Greek Revival house in the community and the only one of its plan. Other wooden examples nearby have lost integrity through additions and new siding.","period_of_significance":"1833, 1914","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Now a single dwelling in use. The house sat vacant for a number of years after the 1960s, deteriorating and suffering vandalism, before it was purchased and saved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.718681-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/92000174.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000174/b7f92cb0a6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000174/b7f92cb0a6-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_M._Annis_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_M._Annis_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987405","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_M._Annis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716544"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/annis-john-m-house-92000174/"}
