Built about 1850, altered 1875-1877, and extensively remodeled in 1908-1911 in the Classical Revival style.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the most prominent and distinctive example of Classical Revival architecture in Clyde. The 1908-1911 remodeling replaced a Victorian veranda and tower with a colossal portico and classical detailing, and the building keeps most of its early twentieth century interior features. It illustrates how 1870s houses were subordinated to early twentieth century improvements.","narrative":"Standing at the northwest corner of West Genesee and Lock Streets in Clyde, this brick residence began as a house of about 1850 and was enlarged in the Victorian Gothic manner in the mid-1870s, when Dr. Jarvis Smith and his wife owned it. Between 1908 and 1911 their daughter, Eugenia C. Ely, had it remodeled into a formal mansion. The Victorian veranda and tower were removed, and a four-columned portico, a classical entrance frame and a roof balustrade were added. Inside, a central hall with a vaulted ceiling recalls Italian Renaissance motifs, while the living and dining rooms show English character. Assessment records show its value more than doubled during the work, making it the most valuable house in the village by 1910. The balustrade and some portico details have been lost, yet the house is considered the village's most distinctive Classical Revival building and a clear example of layered remodeling.","period_of_significance":"1908-11","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Current functions are listed as commerce/trade/business and multiple dwelling; the form says the building retains fair overall integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:44.929813-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/92000032.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000032/d588e31d69-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000032/d588e31d69-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith-Ely_Mansion_Oct_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith-Ely_Mansion_Oct_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322926","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith-Ely_Mansion","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7544905"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/wayne-county/smith-ely-mansion-92000032/"}
