Pilar Street in Nacogdoches, Texas, built in 1897 as a land office. Houston architect Frank E. Rue designed it for surveyor Charles Hoya.","why_significant":"It is one of the least altered historic commercial buildings in downtown Nacogdoches and is a well-preserved example of late-19th-century commercial architecture. It is also tied to Charles Hoya, a prominent local entrepreneur, surveyor and bank president who ran his business there until 1926. It reflects the city's rapid late-19th-century growth.","narrative":"Built in 1897 at 120 E. Pilar Street, this two-story brick building stands just southwest of Nacogdoches' public square. Surveyor and businessman Charles Hoya commissioned it as a fireproof repository for county survey and land records. Houston architect Frank E. Rue designed it with double brick walls separated by an air space and a reinforced-steel ceiling and floor. Its three-bay front has a corbeled brick cornice and a pedimented parapet bearing the building's name. Hoya also offered loan and abstracting services, helped organize the Stone Fort National Bank in 1903, and worked from the office until his death in 1926, after which his son-in-law took over. While most downtown buildings were modernized after the 1940s, this one escaped major alteration, apart from a new porch floor and railing. It remains a free-standing building in a district of row construction, and it is among the best-preserved commercial buildings in the city.","period_of_significance":"1897-1926","architect_builder":"Rue, Frank E.","architectural_style":"Other: One-Part Commercial Block","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition, retaining much of its integrity, and still in commercial/business use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.481202-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/90/9698/40969890/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/92000015.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000015/7d786d555f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/92000015/7d786d555f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Michael Barera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nacogdoches_August_2017_05_(Charles_Hoya_Land_Office).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Barera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nacogdoches_August_2017_05_(Charles_Hoya_Land_Office).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969890","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107321689"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/nacogdoches-county/hoya-land-office-building-92000015/"}
