Washington Ave. in Summerville, Chattooga County, Georgia, built in 1918 from Central of Georgia Railroad plans after an earlier depot burned.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a good example of a functional, no-frills small-town combination depot with features typical of Georgia depots. It also served as the county seat's main rail, freight, mail and telegraph point from 1918 into the 1950s, seeing soldiers leave for and return from both World Wars.","narrative":"Built in 1918 on East Washington Avenue in Summerville, Georgia, this one-story frame depot combined passenger and freight service under a hipped roof with wide eaves. It replaced an earlier depot destroyed by fire in November 1917. Central of Georgia Railroad engineers used a standard combination-depot plan, and the building cost $6,800. Inside were a ticket office with a bay window facing the tracks, two separate waiting rooms for Black and white passengers, and a large freight room. Decoration was limited to wainscoting and modest detailing. The depot served as the county seat's main point for travel, freight, mail and telegraph messages, and it witnessed troops leaving and returning during both World Wars. Passenger service ended in 1950, and the building later became a warehouse and then a craft shop. Largely unaltered apart from the lost loading platform, it is now owned by the county historical society, which plans restoration for meetings, archives and exhibits.","period_of_significance":"1918-1941","architect_builder":"Unknown; designed by company engineers of the Central of Georgia Railroad","architectural_style":"No style (described in the text as prairie style)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned by the Chattooga County Historical Society since 1989, which plans restoration for meetings, archives and museum exhibits; formerly a craft shop in the 1980s; the loading platform has been lost.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.281627-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/91002037.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91002037/ddf0103409-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91002037/ddf0103409-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 4.0","author":"Brian Stansberry","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Summerville-Depot-ga.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Brian Stansberry</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Summerville-Depot-ga.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"12000280","name":"Summerville Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/summerville-commercial-historic-district-12000280/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207394","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summerville_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85804075"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/chattooga-county/summerville-depot-91002037/"}
