Route 200) over West Canada Creek in the village of Newport, Herkimer County, New York. It was built in 1853 under contractor Leonard Boyer.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the bridge is a distinguished example of traditional arched masonry construction and a notable mid-nineteenth century engineering achievement. It is one of the largest vehicular stone arch bridges of its type in New York and is believed to be the oldest surviving bridge in Herkimer County. Its completion also coincided with village growth and westward expansion.","narrative":"Spanning West Canada Creek on Bridge Street in Newport, Herkimer County, this limestone bridge has four segmental arches, measures 238 feet long and 36 feet wide, and carries a two-lane road. Built in 1853 under the supervision of masonry contractor Leonard Boyer of Little Falls, it replaced an earlier wooden bridge and reportedly cost $4,000. Stone came from a quarry on the Fenner farm about a mile west. The bridge is considered significant as a large and well-preserved example of traditional stone arch construction, at a time when longer crossings were usually built as wooden or iron trusses. It is believed to be the oldest surviving bridge in the county, and its completion helped the village expand west of the creek. Apart from the road surface, copings and guard rails, it remains unaltered. Repairs were made in 1910, 1949, and 1979-1980, and shoring was added in 1991 after arch deterioration was found. The listed area includes two stone retaining walls.","period_of_significance":"1853","architect_builder":"Boyer, Leonard, contractor","architectural_style":"Other: stone arch bridge","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still carries vehicular traffic; structural deterioration of the easternmost arch was found in 1990 and temporary steel shoring was installed pending restoration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.128115-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91002035.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91002035/69babb463c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91002035/69babb463c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown artistUnknown artist","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stone_bridge_Newport_N._Y._(below_the_bridge),_from_Robert_N._Dennis_collection_of_stereoscopic_views.png\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown artistUnknown artist</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stone_bridge_Newport_N._Y._(below_the_bridge),_from_Robert_N._Dennis_collection_of_stereoscopic_views.png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318166","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_Stone_Arch_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707092"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/newport-stone-arch-bridge-91002035/"}
