Main Street in Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia, built about 1901 for the Citizens Bank of Vidalia, founded by W. T. Jenkins.","why_significant":"It is considered the first bank in Vidalia and presumably the first brick building in the town, tied to the city's early commercial growth as a railroad town. It is also an intact, finely detailed example of Decorated Vernacular Victorian commercial architecture in a small Georgia town.","narrative":"Built around 1901, this one-story brick storefront on S.E. Main Street in Vidalia, Georgia, housed the town's first bank. W. T. Jenkins, the founder of Vidalia and a turpentine businessman, organized the Citizens Bank of Vidalia after townspeople kept leaving savings with him. The building is thought to be the first brick structure in town. Its front facade has corbelled brickwork, a central pediment, battlements, segmentally arched display windows, stained-glass transoms and granite trim. Inside, a pressed metal ceiling, heart-pine floors, pine trim and an Eastlake-style fireplace mantel survive. The bank moved to larger quarters in 1913, and the building later held shops, a millinery, credit offices, a campaign headquarters and storage. Its listing recognizes its role in Vidalia's early commercial growth as a railroad town and its value as a well-preserved small-town bank design. A 1988 rehabilitation preserved its character, and it remains a store today.","period_of_significance":"C. 1901","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Decorated Vernacular Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in commercial use as a children's clothing store after a rehabilitation completed in March 1988.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.9286-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/91002004.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91002004/a1449c43cb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91002004/a1449c43cb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Citizens_Bank_of_Vidalia.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Citizens_Bank_of_Vidalia.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209695","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_Bank_of_Vidalia","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29093472"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/toombs-county/citizens-bank-of-vidalia-91002004/"}
