The I house is a largely unaltered example of the form that became dominant among prosperous Shenandoah Valley farmers. It also has extensive interior decorative painting, probably from the 1890s, which is uncommon today. The nearby log house is a transitional form between the German Flurkuchenhaus and the I house.","narrative":"Harnsberger Farm is a 42-acre property near Shenandoah in the Shenandoah Valley of Rockingham County, Virginia. It is the surviving core of a farm of about 1,300 acres once owned by Dr. George and Elizabeth Harnsberger. The principal building is a two-story brick Italianate I house, probably built between 1859 and 1861, with a rear ell and two twentieth-century room additions. Its interior has trompe l'oeil ceilings, stenciling, woodgraining and marbling, probably applied in the 1890s, and surviving examples of this kind are uncommon. Nearby stands a two-story log house of square-notched hewn logs under weatherboard, dated to the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Its central fireplace marks a transition between the German-derived house form of the eighteenth century and the I house. The farm stayed in the Harnsberger family for nearly a century. It was recognized for its local architectural importance and its decorative painting.","period_of_significance":"c. 1825-1905","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate; Other: Log dwelling","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed functions include a single dwelling with work in progress, and the form also lists vacant/not in use.
