It contains 270 principal buildings, a stone bridge and 166 outbuildings, dating from about 1748 to the 1930s.","why_significant":"The district is a well-preserved New England mill village whose street grid, houses, commercial, institutional and industrial buildings show its growth from an agrarian settlement into an industrial, commercial and municipal center. Growth peaked in the 1860s and 1870s around textile and cordage mills. The form also notes a range of architectural styles, many built by local carpenters and some designed by architects.","narrative":"Shirley Village is a compact mill community in southern Shirley, Massachusetts, laid out on a regular grid of short streets around the meeting of Main Street and four principal roads. The district covers roughly 66 acres and holds 270 principal buildings, ranging from a few pre-1776 farmhouses to early twentieth century structures. Most are wood-frame houses, about half of them vernacular, alongside Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire and Gothic Revival examples. Brick schoolhouses, a library, churches, a municipal cluster and a cemetery with a Gothic entrance arch add institutional character. Two large industrial sites, the Phoenix Mill, built by the Shakers in 1849, and the President Suspender factory of 1881, anchored local employment, and the Samson Cordage Works and George Frost Company also occupy large parcels. The village grew fastest in the 1860s and 1870s, when mill owners built workers' cottages near the mills while merchants and manufacturers lived on larger streets. Alterations and losses have been modest, so the nineteenth century pattern remains clear.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, plus much vernacular design","criteria":[],"status_note":"Nearly all buildings remain occupied, most used for their original purpose; the two principal industrial sites continue in manufacturing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.17957-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/10/7958/63795810/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/91001958.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001958/66f056c4c8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001958/66f056c4c8-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Free Public Library Commission of Massachusetts","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1899_Shirley_public_library_Massachusetts.png\" rel=\"noopener\">Free Public Library Commission of Massachusetts</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1899_Shirley_public_library_Massachusetts.png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795810","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_Village_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7498874"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/shirley-village-historic-district-91001958/"}
