It was built as a prototype for a planned but never executed Florida residential community, and survives as a rare example of 1930s efforts to produce affordable housing through industrial processes.","narrative":"Built in 1936 on a sloping corner lot in Hastings-on-Hudson, this two-story, 21-foot cube with a rounded entrance corner was assembled from prefabricated reinforced concrete panels bolted together around a partial steel frame. Architect Charles A. Horn drew the plans for Hamlin Andrus, with local concrete fabricator Louis Gelbman producing the panels. The house was a prototype for a planned Florida housing development that was never carried out. Its flat roof, steel casement windows, curved corner and compact plan reflect Moderne ideas of efficiency and economy. It also tried out new technologies for its time, including gas-fired heating and cooling, fluorescent lighting, plywood walls and vermiculite insulation. After a period of abandonment in the 1960s and 1970s, it was restored in 1978, and its exterior and construction system remain largely unaltered. It is considered locally significant for architecture as a rare surviving example of 1930s experiments in industrialized housing.","period_of_significance":"1936","architect_builder":"Charles Horn, architect; Louis Gelbman, builder / fabricator","architectural_style":"Modern Movement - Moderne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored in 1978 after years of neglect; still used as a single dwelling with a garage converted for studio use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:46.091692-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91001873.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001873/5fb7ca6926-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001873/5fb7ca6926-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hastings_Prototype_House,_Hastings-on-Hudson,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hastings_Prototype_House,_Hastings-on-Hudson,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323055","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hastings_Prototype_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706332"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/hastings-prototype-house-91001873/"}
