Liberty Street in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, built in 1913 to a design by Wilmington architect Joseph F. Leitner and constructed by Rhodes & Underwood of New Bern.","why_significant":"The building is associated with the development of rail transportation in Winston-Salem, which supported the growth of local industry, especially tobacco, in the early twentieth century. It served as headquarters of the Winston-Salem Southbound Railway until 1985. The nomination states it is the only surviving railroad building in the city built before 1925.","narrative":"Completed in July 1913, this two-story brick building at 300 S. Liberty Street in Winston-Salem served as the freight warehouse and general offices of the Winston-Salem Southbound Railway. Wilmington architect Joseph F. Leitner designed it, and the New Bern firm Rhodes & Underwood built it. Italianate-influenced details include brick window surrounds, limestone sills and keystones, a shaped parapet, and long bracketed canopies over the loading doors on both sides. The railway, an eighty-nine-mile line to Wadesboro promoted by Francis H. and Henry E. Fries, connected the city to larger rail systems and aided its tobacco-driven growth. The building was altered in 1964, when street widening removed fourteen feet from one end, and was rehabilitated for offices in 1990, when a facade close to the original was restored. It is recognized as the only surviving railroad building in Winston-Salem built before 1925, and its significance is dated 1913 to 1941.","period_of_significance":"1913-1941","architect_builder":"Leitner, Joseph F. - Architect; Rhodes & Underwood - Contractor","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated for office use in 1990 and described as nearly fully occupied by a variety of business firms.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.612218-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/90/7202/47720290/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/91001747.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001747/4769a47c7e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001747/4769a47c7e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:W-S_Southbound_Railway_Freight_Warehouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:W-S_Southbound_Railway_Freight_Warehouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000591","name":"Old Salem Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/old-salem-historic-district-66000591/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720290","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston-Salem_Southbound_Railway_Freight_Warehouse_and_Office","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18619379"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/forsyth-county/winston-salem-southbound-railway-freight-warehouse-and-office-91001747/"}
