It was built in 1928 to designs by Harold O. Fullerton and rebuilt to the same design in 1937 after a fire.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is an outstanding example of Georgian Revival public architecture in Mexico and a fine example of the school designs of Albany architect Harold O. Fullerton. It is noted for its quality craftsmanship, its intact interior, including the wallpaper mural \"La Guerre d'Independence,\" and its role in consolidating surrounding one-room schools in 1937.","narrative":"Mexico Academy and Central School is a large, U-shaped Georgian Revival brick school on Main Street in the village of Mexico, Oswego County. Harold O. Fullerton designed it in 1928. A fire in 1936 nearly destroyed it, and it was rebuilt to the same design in 1937, reusing the foundation and parts of the original structure. The rebuilding also brought several surrounding one-room schools together into a central district. The exterior has a steep slate roof, a tower holding an 1828 bell from an earlier academy building, and a two-story portico with Ionic columns and a balustrade. Inside are marble and bronze stairs, an oak-paneled library, oak parquet floors and a rare, complete wallpaper mural depicting scenes from the American Revolution. Fullerton designed more than fifty schools in New York State. The nomination holds that few schools of this period match this one in craftsmanship and that even fewer survive so intact. The building remains in school use.","period_of_significance":"1928-1937","architect_builder":"Harold O.
