It is also significant under Criterion C in Architecture as a modest example of Prairie School-influenced design. It housed travelers, salesmen and railroad workers and served as a social center for the town.","narrative":"Hotel Turkey is a two-story brick lodging house at 3rd and Alexander Streets in Turkey, Texas. H.B. Jordan of Plainview began building it in spring 1927, a tornado leveled the partly finished structure in June, and the hotel opened in November 1927. A porch with heavy square brick columns and a deep, angular fascia wraps around the east and south sides, giving the building minimal Prairie School-influenced character. Inside, the lobby, stairway and upstairs rooms keep original yellow pine woodwork, pressed metal ceilings and period furnishings. The hotel was built as the town anticipated a new Burlington railroad branch, and it housed cotton brokers, ranchers, railroad workers and traveling salesmen who showed goods in its sample room. It also hosted dances, banquets and civic meetings. It stayed open through the Depression, the Dust Bowl and the population decline that followed, and it continues to operate as a hotel after a recent restoration.","period_of_significance":"1927-1941","architect_builder":"Unknown (built for H.B.
