It was built in 1904 as a retail store with offices and an apartment on the second floor.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a notable example of early twentieth-century popular small-scale commercial design and remains virtually unaltered. It is also linked to the development of retail trade in Macon County through the Pendergrass family's store, which supplied goods, cash loans and other services to residents and surrounding communities until 1975.","narrative":"Built in 1904 on Main Street in Franklin, the two-story brick building was constructed by J. R. Pendergrass, a former Baptist pastor and school superintendent who ran a dry goods business there. Its plate glass storefront, cast iron piers and interior of heart-of-yellow pine counters, turned maple posts and a mezzanine balcony survive largely intact. The store sold foodstuffs, school books, building materials and clothing, and Pendergrass offered small cash loans to customers. Its upper apartment has seven fireplaces and an oak mantel in each. The building was operated by the Pendergrass family until 1975, after fire damage that year. In 1988 the Macon County Historical Society acquired it, and it now houses a local history museum. It is recognized for its commercial and architectural significance to the town and county.","period_of_significance":"1904-1941","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Commercial Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Operated as a retail store until 1975; purchased by the Macon County Historical Society in 1988 for use as a local history museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:40.694096-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/20/7211/47721120/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/91001469.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001469/83b5accce8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001469/83b5accce8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pendergrass_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pendergrass_Building.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721120","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendergrass_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18155823"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/macon-county/pendergrass-building-91001469/"}
