It is also nominated under Criterion C as a distinctive building type of the area's mid-19th century building practices. The house keeps its roof profile, materials, proportions, setback and setting.","narrative":"Built about 1851 beside the Olentangy River in Stratford, this 1-1/2 story limestone cottage housed workers from the nearby Andrews and Perry paper mill. It is made of uncoursed rubble limestone with stone quoins, a gable roof, wood fishscale shingles in the front gable and a recessed porch with two front doors set at right angles. The land was bought in 1838 by Hosea Williams and Caleb Howard to build houses for mill workers, and the mill owners kept ownership of the row of limestone houses. Census records name several mill employees who lived here between 1853 and 1901. The house reflects the mill village model, a small hamlet of single-family homes in a rural setting grouped around one mill. It retains its original form, materials and setting. A rear addition, hidden from the road, and some interior changes are its main alterations. A carriage barn and privy behind it add to the rural character.","period_of_significance":"c. 1833-1896","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: worker cottage","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; a carriage barn and privy behind the house are counted as noncontributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.840061-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/91001435.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001435/9980728104-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001435/9980728104-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mill_Worker_House_No._5.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mill_Worker_House_No._5.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984743","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137762206"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/delaware-county/mill-worker-house-no-5-91001435/"}
