Most buildings date from the 1890s through the 1930s.","why_significant":"The district preserves the core of the town's commercial center west of Los Gatos Creek, which grew after the railroad arrived in 1877. Its buildings reflect rebuilding after the 1891 and 1901 fires and illustrate typical storefront design from Queen Anne to Art Deco. About three-fourths of the district retains the integrity of its 1941 forms.","narrative":"Along West Main Street, North Santa Cruz Avenue and University Avenue in Los Gatos, 25 buildings form a compact commercial district on a level bluff above Los Gatos Creek. Nineteen contribute to its character, including a river-rock Bungalow house. Most are one or two stories with large display windows and strong cornices, and their trim ranges from Queen Anne to Art Deco, with Mission Revival and Classical or Colonial Revival common. A witch-hatted Queen Anne corner tower has become a symbol of Victorian Los Gatos. The district grew after the railroad reached town in 1877 and drew commerce west of the creek. Fires shaped it: the 1891 blaze led to brick construction requirements, and the 1901 fire destroyed both sides of West Main Street, which were rebuilt by 1910. Storefronts have been modernized repeatedly, yet about three-fourths of the district keeps the integrity of its 1941 form. Repairs followed the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Enframed window wall commercial storefronts; Mission Revival, Queen Anne, Romanesque, Italian Renaissance, Art Deco, Bungalow, and late 19th and 20th century revivals","criteria":[],"status_note":"Largely in very good condition, with small specialty shops and eating and drinking places.
