The three buildings form the town's municipal center, built as late 19th and early 20th century growth required larger public facilities. They also represent the Colonial Revival and Jacobethan Revival styles in well-preserved form.","narrative":"Three buildings at the junction of Nahant Road and Pleasant Street form the civic center of Nahant, a peninsula town in Essex County, Massachusetts. The Public Library, built in 1895 to designs by Ball and Dabney of Boston, is a Jacobethan Revival building of Weymouth granite with Ohio sandstone trim and a slate roof. Its interior keeps cypress and oak paneling, carved mantelpieces and coffered ceilings. The Post Office Block of 1900 is a two-story clapboard Colonial Revival commercial building, built by Francis H. Johnson, with post office and store space. The Town Hall of 1912 is a buff brick Colonial Revival building with a cupola, designed by Andrews, Jaques and Rantoul. Public buildings have stood here since a stone schoolhouse of 1819, and the present group arose as Nahant's year-round and summer populations grew. The three buildings share scale, massing and siting amid mostly wooden houses, and they remain in use today.","period_of_significance":"1895-1912","architect_builder":"Andrews, Jaques & Rantoul; Ball & Dabney","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival; Jacobethan Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The library, town hall and post office block remain in their historic uses; the post office shares its building with a convenience store. The library and town hall are described as largely intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.558477-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7947/63794796/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/91001174.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001174/b5f638dd27-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001174/b5f638dd27-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office,_Nahant_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Post_Office,_Nahant_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794796","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nahant_Civic_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6959187"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/nahant-civic-historic-district-91001174/"}
