The 1907 Akron plan rear apse and the 1909 barrel-vaulted ceiling are noted as significant design elements added later. It is also the second oldest surviving church building in Cartersville.","narrative":"Two blocks from downtown Cartersville, on a landscaped corner lot, stands a brick church that grew out of a congregation organized south of the town in 1843. Friendship Presbyterian moved into a Greek Revival brick building on the site in 1853. In 1886 that building was enlarged into its present Romanesque Revival form, and the congregation took the name First Presbyterian. The front gable has a corbelled brick cornice and three-part stained glass windows, flanked by a square bell tower and an octagonal tower with a conical roof, each holding an entrance. Round-arched openings and corbelled brickwork carry the style along the sides. A multi-sided rear apse with an Akron plan, built in 1907 for educational meeting space, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling added in 1909 reflect later changes. The church is the second oldest surviving church building in Cartersville, after the 1879 Episcopal Church of the Ascension, and is listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1886, 1907, 1909","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use; rear additions were made in the 1940s and 1960s and expanded in 1987-1988.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.542622-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/91001157.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001157/3327305767-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001157/3327305767-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Amesmultimedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Cartersville.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Amesmultimedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_of_Cartersville.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"14000904","name":"Cartersville Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/cartersville-downtown-historic-district-14000904/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206946","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_(Cartersville,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8563358"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bartow-county/first-presbyterian-church-91001157/"}
