It blends Classical Revival and Queen Anne elements and shows fine craftsmanship inside and out. The c. 1930 garage and driveway document early accommodation of the automobile.","narrative":"Set on a flat 1.3-acre lot in the middle Georgia town of Hawkinsville, this two-story frame house began about 1840 as a one-story building with a gabled roof, symmetrical layout, square porch columns and a pedimented front portico. In 1895 it was enlarged to two stories and given late Victorian features, including a wrap-around porch, a two-story pedimented central porch with a balcony, modillioned cornices, and four stained-glass windows in the front gable. Inside, a wide central hall holds an elaborate stair with turned balusters and carved newel posts. Ten fireplaces, several with tile surrounds, cast-iron fireboxes and overmirrors, are served by three chimneys. Heart-pine floors, pocket doors, wainscoting and a built-in china cabinet survive. A c. 1930 frame garage, a concrete driveway and hexagonal sidewalk pavers remain on the grounds. The house was listed for its architecture, as a clear example of an older home remodeled to follow changing fashion by blending Classical Revival and Queen Anne influences.","period_of_significance":"C. 1840, 1895, C. 1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne (with Classical Revival elements)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form notes recent minor changes to adapt it for reuse.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.941473-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/91001156.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001156/8763a4c3b9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001156/8763a4c3b9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Merritt-Ragan_House,_Hawkinsville,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Merritt-Ragan_House,_Hawkinsville,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209289","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merritt-Ragan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29093540"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/pulaski-county/merritt-ragan-house-91001156/"}
