Its archaeological remains are argued to be significant under Criterion D for their potential to reveal furnace layout, products, and worker and ironmaster lifestyles. The ironmaster's mansion and the Carpenter Gothic counting house are argued to be significant under Criterion C.","narrative":"Dale Furnace and Forge is a stone-built iron plantation in a valley north of the village of Dale, along the West Branch of the Perkiomen Creek. Joseph and Thomas Potts built the furnace in 1791, and a forge followed between 1804 and 1811. The furnace produced stoves, skillets, kettles and anvils from ore brought largely from the Colebrookdale mines. Its operations ceased after about 1822, after which the forge became the centre of activity. It produced bloom and bar iron along with chisels, hinges, axles and plows, and closed in 1868 when its last pig iron supplier went out of blast. The district contains the ironmaster's mansion, begun in 1791 in the Federal style, along with a barn, a worker's house, and a Carpenter Gothic office building dating from 1827 and 1854. Stone ruins of the furnace stack, forge foundations, and dam survive as archaeological remains. The 1835 map of the complex is a key record of the layout.","period_of_significance":"1791-1868","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal (ironmaster's mansion); Carpenter Gothic (counting house)","criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"The horse barn is roofless; the furnace survives only as archaeological remains; the forge closed in 1868.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.113843-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/91001134.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001134/e89951262b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001134/e89951262b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Hshuvaeva","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dale_Furnace_and_Forge_HD_Horse_Barn_02.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Hshuvaeva</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dale_Furnace_and_Forge_HD_Horse_Barn_02.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71992406","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Furnace_and_Forge_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5210448"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/berks-county/dale-furnace-and-forge-historic-district-91001134/"}
