The furnace was built in 1811 by Andrew Henderson and Robert Allison.","why_significant":"The nomination presents the furnace as a representative example of the westward expansion of the Pennsylvania iron industry and as one of the earlier furnaces in the Juniata ironmaking area. It is also argued to be significant for its furnace stack as an engineering work, which retains its basic integrity despite later alterations.","narrative":"Built in 1811 by Andrew Henderson and Robert Allison, the stone iron furnace stack and its office and company store stand on Crescent Avenue in Altoona. Henderson had assembled more than 3,000 acres, and the furnace was named for Allegheny Township. It was the second furnace established in what was then Huntingdon County, now Blair County. Elias Baker acquired the property in 1836, raised the stack, and built a lime kiln, sawmill, charcoal house, and six tenant houses. The furnace was rebuilt in 1847 and again in 1852, then converted to coke around 1864 to 1867 under Sylvester C. Baker. It operated until 1884. The site is valued for representing the iron industry of the Juniata Valley, whose iron was prized for the rolling mills of Pittsburgh, and for the engineering of its surviving stack, which was restored in 1939.","period_of_significance":"1811-1884","architect_builder":"Andrew Henderson and Robert Allison (builders of the furnace, 1811)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.205349-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/91001131.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001131/23a9eb9f8c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001131/23a9eb9f8c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jet Lowe","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allegheny_Furnace.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jet Lowe</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allegheny_Furnace.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71992422","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegheny_Furnace","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4731304"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/blair-county/allegheny-furnace-91001131/"}
