It has seven contributing buildings and five contributing structures, built in 1931-1932.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance under Criteria A and C. The station reflects California's reliance on maritime transportation and navigation aids. It is also an intact example of Spanish Revival design, used at only one other California light station, and was the last light station complex completed in the state.","narrative":"Anacapa Island Light Station occupies the eastern 40 acres of Anacapa Island in Channel Islands National Park, overlooking the east entrance of the Santa Barbara Channel. The complex includes a reinforced concrete lighthouse tower with its original 3rd order Fresnel lens, a fog-signal building, an assistant keeper's residence, a visitors' center, a tank house, a power house, an oil house, a derrick building, two landings, a stairway and a concrete rainshed. The landings and stairway date from 1931, and the buildings from 1932. Most buildings use Spanish Revival styling, with white stucco walls and red tile roofs, a style popular in Southern California in the 1920s and 1930s. Only Point Vicente Light Station shares this style among California light stations. The station was built after shipwrecks and a commercial fishing boom increased the need for a permanent light, and it was the last light station complex completed in California. The original keeper's dwelling was accidentally demolished in 1978.","period_of_significance":"1932-1940","architect_builder":"Lippman, M.W.","architectural_style":"Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Buildings are generally in very good condition and retain high integrity. The tower still holds its original 3rd order Fresnel lens, the lighthouse continues to play a role in navigation, and the general services building serves as the National Park Service Visitors' Center.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.822738-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/91001101.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001101/b7c36cfcd1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001101/b7c36cfcd1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"United States Coast Guard","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USCGanacapa.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">United States Coast Guard</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USCGanacapa.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857871","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anacapa_Island_Light","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4750635"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/ventura-county/anacapa-island-light-station-additional-documentation-91001101/"}
