It was built in 1832 by Peter Conover and remodeled circa 1870-1890.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is a rare and distinctive example of early nineteenth century meetinghouse design in the Finger Lakes region, with a facade using paneled parapet walls to conceal the gable roof. It retains its Federal style exterior configuration and detailing along with a largely unaltered Victorian period auditorium, lobby and stairways. The later remodeling shows changing religious needs and tastes. It is one of a small and increasingly threatened group of intact nineteenth century meetinghouses in the region.","narrative":"Built in 1832 by Peter Conover for a Methodist congregation at West Dryden, this frame meetinghouse measures 40 by 52 feet and sits on a hilltop lot in rural Tompkins County. Its facade is distinctive: paneled parapet walls hide the gable roof and flank a tower topped by an octagonal belfry, giving the front added height. Pilasters, tapered gallery columns and slender cornices reflect Federal period detailing. Between about 1870 and 1890 the congregation inserted a second floor, creating a ground-floor meeting space and an upstairs auditorium with Victorian wainscoting, pews and a scroll-sawn balustrade. The Methodist conference sold the building to the Town of Dryden in 1948, after the hamlet could no longer support a church. A community association has used it since 1966. It is recognized for architecture as a rare, little-altered example of regional meetinghouse design and later adaptation, and local volunteers have supported its preservation.","period_of_significance":"1832-c. 1890","architect_builder":"Peter Conover (builder)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Owned by the Town of Dryden and used as a community meeting hall; the ceiling is badly deteriorated, the belfry openings are boarded up, and volunteers have made emergency repairs.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:45.737731-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/91001029.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001029/3293379afb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91001029/3293379afb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WEST_DRYDEN_METHODIST_CHURCH_EPISCOPAL_CHURCH,_TOMPKINS_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322534","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Dryden_Methodist_Episcopal_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7984993"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tompkins-county/west-dryden-methodist-episcopal-church-91001029/"}
