It is also significant for community planning, as part of a carefully laid out group of buildings in a large planned area. Criterion B was not applied because the years Rice lived there are unknown.","narrative":"This small Spanish Colonial Revival cottage at 16780 La Gracia in Rancho Santa Fe was designed by architect Lilian Jenette Rice and dates to about 1924. The one-story, U-shaped house faces east and has stuccoed walls, a low gabled red clay tile roof, wood-framed casement and fixed windows, and a stuccoed chimney in a New Mexican Puebloan style. A tiled, covered patio sits at the rear, and eucalyptus trees surround the roughly 1,500-square-foot home. A small board-and-batten addition was made in 1930. It was listed for its architecture and its role in community planning. It shows the simplicity, restrained ornament, smooth plaster, tile roofs, arched entries and private patios found in Rice's other work, blended with the natural terrain. Rice supervised the planned community of Rancho Santa Fe for Requa and Jackson from 1922 to 1927 and later opened her own office there. She is said to have lived in the cottage around 1924, though the exact years are unknown.","period_of_significance":"1924","architect_builder":"Rice, Lilian Jenette","architectural_style":"Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single-family private dwelling; a small board-and-batten addition was made in 1930.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.772463-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/91000946.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000946/3c955f18a5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000946/3c955f18a5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LILLAN_JENETTE_RICE_HOUSE,_RANCHO_SANTA_FE_SAN_DIEGO_COUNTY_CA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123857772","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5754297"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-diego-county/rice-lilian-jenette-house-91000946/"}
