It began as a one-story, four-room house built about 1826-1830 and was enlarged into a hotel in 1883.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant in commerce and transportation as a local hotel serving travelers after the railroad reached McDonough in 1882, run by a widow, Sallie Knott Brown. It is also significant in architecture as a rare surviving small-town wood-frame hotel that keeps its house-to-hotel arrangement and many original materials.","narrative":"Located a block south of the courthouse square in McDonough, this two-story frame building began about 1826 as a one-story, four-room house built for Andrew McBride. In 1883, after the railroad reached the town in 1882, widow Sallie Knott Brown added a second floor and a rear ell and turned it into a hotel. The upper level has small guest rooms and a large dormitory-style room where travelers could stay more cheaply. Boards from the original downstairs walls were reused for the new floors. In 1893 a local newspaper called it the most hospitable and home-like hotel between Macon and Atlanta. Later it served as a boarding house and community dining room, and in 1897 the superior court met upstairs while a new courthouse was built. Original features survive, including heart-pine floors, nine-over-nine windows, angled corner fireplaces and a plain staircase. A local historical group is restoring it for use as a county museum and meeting space.","period_of_significance":"1826-1941","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No architectural style; an evolved house type (described as evolved eclectic)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned by a local historical organization, which is restoring it; plans call for a county museum, receptions and meeting space. It formerly served as a clubhouse.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.69022-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/91000908.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000908/c89b617bc5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000908/c89b617bc5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brown_House,_McDonough,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brown_House,_McDonough,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07001201","name":"McDonough Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/mcdonough-historic-district-07001201/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208654","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_House_(McDonough,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55606030"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/henry-county/brown-house-91000908/"}
