Rt. 623 along the New River near Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia. It centers on Kentland, a brick I house built in 1834-35, with farm buildings, a mill, a cemetery, fords and prehistoric sites.","why_significant":"The district holds a sophisticated Federal and Greek Revival brick house and a largely intact nineteenth-century farm complex. It also contains thirteen archaeological sites, including Late Woodland Native American villages and camps and early river and creek fords. The Whitethorne site is described as especially significant because few Late Woodland villages survive in the region.","narrative":"Kentland Farm is a 350-acre district on the New River in northwestern Montgomery County, Virginia, reached from the end of Va. Rt. 623. Its centerpiece is Kentland, a two-story, five-bay Flemish-bond brick house built in 1834-35, with a central-passage plan, a rear ell, a limestone foundation and detailed Federal and Greek Revival woodwork, including carved mantels and a three-run stair. Nearby are a hexagonal brick meat house, an altered antebellum frame dwelling, a mid-nineteenth-century barn and corncrib, a mill and the Kent-Cowan cemetery. The district also covers Buchanans Bottom, an early patented tract, and two early fords. Thirteen archaeological sites have been recorded. Five are Late Woodland Native American sites, among them the Whitethorne site, a well-preserved village with good horizontal and vertical integrity. Because comparable villages in the county have been destroyed, this site is considered important for regional study. Other sites relate to nineteenth-century plantation life and early transportation routes.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"The property is still used as a single dwelling with secondary structures, and also as a research facility. Part of the Whitethorne site is in pasture and well preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.707455-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/32/6788/41678832/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/91000833.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000833/a26c26f373-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000833/a26c26f373-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Kenneth Novy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kentland_Farm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenneth Novy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kentland_Farm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678832","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentland_Farm_Historic_and_Archeological_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712660"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/montgomery-county/kentland-farm-historic-and-archeological-district-91000833/"}
