It is the centerpiece of a 2.265-acre farm complex with four outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a noteworthy local example of a vernacular L-plan residence, one of the town's most intact, under Criterion C. It is also one of the few intact farm complexes in Burton, retaining original acreage, outbuildings and mature vegetation. The nomination notes possible further study for Criterion D.","narrative":"Built about 1890 on Railroad Street at the western edge of Burton, this L-plan farmhouse with a rear ell anchors a 2.265-acre farm complex. Modest Queen Anne touches include a one-bay porch with slender turned columns and jigsawn brackets, corner pilasters, weatherboard siding, 2/2 wood windows and a roof of intersecting gables with deeply kicked eaves. Four outbuildings remain: a probable wash house, a barn, an outhouse and a one-car garage. Pecan trees and a mature mimosa shade the grounds. It was the long-time home of William Edward Sanders, who worked for the railroad and the Wendt Gin. The property was listed because it is one of Burton's most intact vernacular L-plan houses, a disappearing local building type, and one of few surviving farm complexes reflecting the town's mix of urban and rural life. Some porch fabric and a rear porch have been altered, but the house remains recognizable to its period.","period_of_significance":"c.1890","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; L-plan vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is single dwelling; the house is described as in good condition with unusually good exterior integrity, though the front porch has lost some historic fabric and little paint remains.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.96941-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/9706/40970633/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/91000716.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000716/37c81653c9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000716/37c81653c9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Edward_Sanders_House_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Edward_Sanders_House_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970633","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002471"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/sanders-william-edward-house-91000716/"}
