The rear dwelling was built about 1916 by carpenter Will Weeren and has bungalow details such as a battered skirt foundation, a tapered porch column, paired windows and a low hipped metal roof. A two-story frame commercial building was attached to its front, with a shed-roof porch and a pair of centered doors. Three outbuildings stand at the back, including the original cobbler's shop. Otto Wehring Sr., a cobbler and harness maker, bought the dwelling in 1922 and worked from a small gabled building at the front of the lot. After his death in 1931, his son moved that building to the rear and had carpenters A. Huebner and R. Rosenbaum add the new shop. The business supported Burton's role as a trade and service center for western Washington County from 1922 to 1941, and the shop operated until 1976.","period_of_significance":"1922-1941","architect_builder":"Will Weeren; Arthur Huebner; Rudi Rosenbaum","architectural_style":"Bungalow; Other: Two-part commercial block","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant; tools of the cobbler's trade remain intact in the shop.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:20.85361-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/9706/40970693/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/91000714.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000714/4486456e40-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000714/4486456e40-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wehring_Shoe_Shop_and_Residence.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wehring_Shoe_Shop_and_Residence.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970693","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002467"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/wehring-shoe-shop-and-residence-91000714/"}
