The new ginhouse was completed in 1914 and has been altered over time.","why_significant":"It is the sole surviving gin in Burton, a community defined by the cotton industry, and the nomination calls it a fine example of an early 20th century gin plant. It keeps a rare, full complement of processing equipment. It is nominated for its associations with local cotton production and Burton's role as a trade and processing center.","narrative":"Burton Farmers Gin is a large frame cotton gin on Main Street in Burton, Texas, covered in sheet metal and rising two and three stories. Local cotton growers formed the Burton Farmers Gin Association in 1913, and the plant began operating with the 1914 cotton season. It grew over the years, gaining a coal house, an office, roof extensions and, in 1961, a raised central roof for a third story holding dryers and ducts. Equipment changed too: an automatic bale press arrived in 1921, five air blast gin stands replaced the originals in the mid-1920s, and a 125-horsepower engine was installed in 1926. The association ran the gin until 1974, longer than any other Burton gin under one management. It is the only surviving gin in the town and compares well with a brick ginhouse in Brenham, the only other known survivor in the county. Its full set of machinery adds to its importance. The property is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"1914-1941","architect_builder":"Weeren Brothers","architectural_style":"No Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant; the Burton Farmers Gin Association operated the plant until 1974.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.690984-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/3/9707/40970703/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/91000712.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000712/06dee3bb5a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000712/06dee3bb5a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BurtonCottonGin1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BurtonCottonGin1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970703","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burton_Farmers_Gin","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29641569"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/burton-farmers-gin-91000712/"}
