It embodies the independent school districts that provided local institutions below the level of town meeting. It also reflects the growth of the surrounding neighborhood as Webster developed from mill villages into a commercial center.","narrative":"Built in 1835, the District Five or Fenner Hill Schoolhouse is a small, one-room brick school on School Street in Webster, Massachusetts. It measures about 32 by 25 feet, rests on a granite-capped foundation, and has granite sills and lintels, with its entry in the south gable end. Small frame additions at the front and rear held a vestibule and, later, heating and plumbing functions. Harvey Wood won the construction contract for $439, and the land was bought for $7. It was the first new school established after Webster was incorporated in 1832, serving the southern and western part of town. The district chose a traditional form, and the brick helped the building last. It served as an ungraded school and then, from 1883, as a primary school, remaining in use into the late 1930s. Today it houses the Webster-Dudley Historical Society museum and is valued as a well-preserved Greek Revival district school.","period_of_significance":"1835-1935","architect_builder":"Wood, Harvey","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Now used as a museum and meeting place for the Webster-Dudley Historical Society; the interior was remodeled in 1973 and the rear ell was rebuilt after an early 1970s fire.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.590852-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/82/7973/63797382/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/91000697.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000697/881b437994-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000697/881b437994-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WebsterMA_DudleyWebsterHistoricalSociety.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WebsterMA_DudleyWebsterHistoricalSociety.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797382","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_Five_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5283321"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/district-five-schoolhouse-91000697/"}
