It was probably built between 1834 and 1854.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a rare, very intact surviving example of a log dogtrot in Georgia, where only a few remain. It is also notable for its hand-hewn log construction with square corner notching and battened joints. The mid-19th-century shed additions and the kitchen outbuilding illustrate typical ways such houses were expanded.","narrative":"Set in a swept-dirt clearing among cedar, magnolia and pine trees just outside Kathleen, this log dogtrot house in Houston County, Georgia, was probably built between 1834 and 1854. Its main section has hand-hewn logs joined with square notches, an open central passageway with a room on each side, and attic rooms reached by a stair. Narrow wooden battens cover the joints between logs. Shed-roofed additions at the front and rear, likely from the 1850s, added living space, and a one-room outbuilding that may have been a kitchen remains behind the house. The house sits on stone piers, has brick chimneys with stone bases, and has never had electricity or plumbing. Hugh L. Dennard, who owned the land from 1834 to 1848, most likely built it. Dr. Robert Campbell Bryan bought it in 1856 and his family kept it for generations. It is recognized for architecture because few intact log dogtrot houses survive in Georgia.","period_of_significance":"c.1834-1854","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: dogtrot","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a rental residence; no electricity or plumbing has been introduced into the house.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.497279-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/91000681.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208678","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Log_Dogtrot_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q105820850"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/houston-county/log-dogtrot-house-91000681/"}
