Its north parlor has freehand wall paintings attributed to an itinerant painter whose work appears elsewhere in the region. The property stayed in the Alexander family from construction until 1941.","narrative":"Built around 1780 on Millers Falls Road in Northfield, this five-bay, 2 1/2-story farmhouse with a rear ell was the seat of the Alexander family farm. Simeon Alexander Jr., a Revolutionary War lieutenant, bought the land from his father-in-law, Hezekiah Stratton, when he married in 1780. The family also ran a blacksmith shop on the property for about seventy years. The post-and-beam house keeps much of its original plan and finish work, including a dogleg staircase, paneling and wide plank floors. Its north parlor carries freehand wall paintings of birds, animals and swags, attributed to an itinerant painter who also decorated the nearby Stratton Tavern. The Alexanders owned the property until 1941, and the farm outbuildings were removed in the 1940s. The house is recognized locally as an exceptionally well preserved late Colonial and early Federal farmhouse, and for the rare painted decoration inside. The property also has high archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1780-1941","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restoration is in progress to remove asphalt siding and expose the original clapboards; the house is a single-family dwelling, and the pastures are leased to neighboring farmers for grazing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.542967-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/95/7950/63795095/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/91000598.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000598/a467f1b455-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000598/a467f1b455-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthfieldMA_SimeonAlexanderJrHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthfieldMA_SimeonAlexanderJrHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795095","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simeon_Alexander_Jr._House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7517561"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/franklin-county/alexander-simeon-jr-house-91000598/"}
