Convent in Victoria, Victoria County, Texas, designed in 1900 by Jules Leffland as his own residence.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C for architecture. Leffland was Victoria's most prominent turn-of-the-century architect, and this house is an outstanding local example of Classical Revival, the style he used most often and most successfully. It reflects the architectural development of Victoria.","narrative":"Built in 1900 at 302 East Convent in Victoria, Texas, this two-and-a-half-story frame house was designed by Jules Leffland as his own home. Leffland, a native of Denmark, had arrived in Victoria by 1886 and became the town's most prominent architect of the period, designing dwellings and commercial buildings for wealthy residents and local institutions. The house shows his preference for Classical Revival design. A two-story elliptical porch wraps the south, east and west sides, supported by fluted columns with Ionic capitals. The symmetrical seven-bay south facade has a centered entrance with leaded, beveled glass, a transom and sidelights. Scored wood siding resembles cut stone, and a hipped roof carries gabled dormers and a denticulated cornice. Leffland later sold the house to a local grocer, Louis Hyak. Three outbuildings stand at the rear, including a two-story garage with an apartment, and these are counted as non-contributing. The house has been rehabilitated and remains in good condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Jules Leffland","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and recently restored or rehabilitated; still in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.66356-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/9704/40970400/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/91000577.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000577/3171102b04-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000577/3171102b04-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"ProfReader","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leffland_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">ProfReader</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leffland_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970400","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Leffland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6305923"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/leffland-jules-house-91000577/"}
