Greenwood Avenue in Chicago, built in 1887 as Kenwood Evangelical Church, with a gymnasium addition added in 1924.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is a superior, textbook example of Romanesque Revival church design under Criterion C. It was designed by William W. Boyington with H.B. Wheelock, and is one of the few surviving works of Boyington, a leading Chicago architect. It also reflects the wealth and prominence of the Kenwood congregation.","narrative":"Kenwood Evangelical Church, later Kenwood United Church of Christ, is a large Romanesque Revival building at the southwest corner of Greenwood Avenue and 46th Street in Chicago. Completed in 1887, it is faced in Maryland granite with Indiana limestone trim and has an asymmetrical facade, a single square corner tower, deeply recessed arched windows and carved ornament. Inside, the sanctuary has an open timber truss ceiling, original wooden pews and a balcony added soon after construction. A brick gymnasium and classroom addition by Chatten & Hammond followed in 1924. The church was designed by William W. Boyington with H.B. Wheelock. Boyington was a prominent Chicago architect whose other major works have mostly been demolished, which makes this church a rare survivor. Its amphitheatre-style seating plan and large scale were considered up to date for the time. Early members included many prominent Chicago business and civic figures from the Kenwood neighborhood.","period_of_significance":"1880","architect_builder":"Boyington, William W. and Wheelock, H.B.","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a church and church school, with high interior and exterior integrity according to the form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.595311-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/8921/28892114/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/91000570.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000570/288e0e849f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/91000570/288e0e849f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20080909_Kenwood_Evangelical_Church_from_west.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20080909_Kenwood_Evangelical_Church_from_west.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892114","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenwood_Evangelical_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6392511"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/kenwood-evangelical-church-91000570/"}
